#CatalanGP: Run off to cost top 20 at Barcelona
After almost crashing at the Montmelo track, the 19-year-old newcomer nevertheless finished the race for test and training purposes.
The season’s round seven was accompanied by stable weather. Hot summer temperatures, however, were demanding to human and machines. For Kiefer Racing and its rookie Lukas Tulovic, race day in Catalonia started with a solid performance during this morning’s warm-up. On top of that they’re able to confirm its consistent pace from free practice sessions. From this point of view, Tulovic was heading confidently into the race. However, problems with the front threw all plans over the top.
Until the next race in two weeks, the series will move from southern Europe to the north of the Netherlands to the historic TT Circuit in Assen.
#3 Lukas TULOVIC (Kiefer Racing, KTM), P24:
"Once again it was a race in which a lot more should have to come out. I got away well at the start, lined up on the outside and rode very well through the first corners. In doing so, I was able to make up some positions. I felt really strong and I also had some established riders in front of me. I fought like a lion because I wanted to keep up with these guys of course. But it didn't take long until the first problems with the front wheel occurred. Again, and again I had small slides, as well as the front felt very nervous in some places. Soon later, the front folded in turn four. I was barely able to avoid a fall. But I had no other choice than to run into the gravel."
"When I was back on track again, I got passed by all other riders. As the last one I rode far behind the pack. The situation was hopeless. Nevertheless, I finished the race to collect important kilometres and data. Towards the end, my lap times were okay. Racing in a group, I would have pushed more for sure. But in the race my feeling for the front wasn’t as good as it was in qualifying or during warm-up this morning. In this respect we first have to evaluate the data and then on Tuesday we'll have a test here where we can also try and test some other things."
Jochen KIEFER (Team manager / Technical director):
"Until the race it was actually a good weekend for us. Unfortunately, in qualifying we couldn't get what we had hoped for. In the end, three or four tenths of a second, we were missing. But overall, we were satisfied with Lukas' performance. Nevertheless, for the race we were well prepared because we were able to put in consistent and fast laps at any time. In the race Lukas made a good start today and he immediately settled well in a good group. He also quickly started to overtake riders."
"Unfortunately, he then had a problem with the front wheel, which was the reason for one run off into the gravel. Therefore, the race was over for him. His gap was too big, so he couldn't intervene anymore. Too bad that it went like this. Until this incident, however, he had shown his potential. In two weeks, we'll be doing better at Assen."
